Young & Mc Master, Auburn, New York: Unused Pr. Of Molding Plane
An UNUSED PAIR OF APPLEWOOD TONGUE & GROOVE MOLDING PLANES by Young & Mc Master, Auburn, New York. Both are marked with the imprint "D. Heald". They came from the tool chest of Daniel Heald, who worked as a carpenter in the Village of Moravia, New York in the 1840's and 1850's. The land west of the Pre-Emption line was settled by veterans of the American Revolution following the war as the previous owners of the land had mistakenly thrown in their lot with the British, who lost the war. The settlers planted orchards of apple trees, which were old and were being harvested for lumber by the time planemaking began in earnest in Western New York. Applewood was used for both plow planes and molding planes by the contractors who produced wooden molding planes using the labor of prisoners, which was contracted for by a series of entrepreneurs from the 1820's to the 1870's, when the practice was ceased, owing to objections from "mechanics", who felt that the prison labor was unfair competition. Length = 9.50 Inches. Pre-Sale Estimate: $80.00 - $160.00. (FINE)
